Is it possible to have a security alarm in a home with pets?

Many pet owners believe that an alarm system will not work if the pet is free to move around the room, but this is not the case. It is possible to install a security alarm in a home with pets if certain aspects are taken into account, depending on the type of alarm, the home and the pet.

For some years now, there have been so-called "pet alarms" in the security sector. Here we describe what they are, how they work and whether they are the right solution for your home.

What exactly is a pet alarm?

A pet alarm system is basically very similar to a conventional alarm system. As a rule, it consists of the central unit, sensors and detectors, cameras (if necessary) and a connection to an Alarm Receiving Centre.

The main difference is the motion sensors that are part of the system, the passive infrared or pet-friendly PIR motion sensors.

How do pet-friendly PIR detectors work?

A passive infrared (PIR) detector is designed to detect the movement of body heat, i.e. passive infrared energy, and continuously monitor for changes in body heat.

This passive infrared energy is fairly constant in an empty room, but changes considerably when a person or animal enters the room. Ordinary PIR detectors are not able to distinguish between people and animals. However, those suitable for pets are able to discriminate between pets and do not trigger an alarm. They work best for pets up to 20 kg and 50 cm.

If I have a very large dog, will it trigger the alarm?

In this case there are other alarm configuration options to meet the needs of a household with large dogs or even very active pets.

For example, consider installing magnetic detectors on doors and windows that sense unauthorized opening or glass-break detectors that detect the sound and frequency of glass breaking.

Another recommended option is the installation of PIR detectors with built-in cameras. These devices are designed to take a snapshot or a sequence of snapshots of what the detector sees in the room at the moment of alarm activation. These images are sent directly to the owner's smartphone via the alarm app installed on their phone or to the Alarm Receiving Center to assess whether it is an intrusion or if the dog is where it shouldn't be.
